Science Careers – The 7 Career Paths for Scientists

Hi Reader, what career paths beyond academia are available to scientists?

We usually don’t know much about this topic, as it is rarely addressed at university.

However, this knowledge can make your planning, job search, and self-exploration much easier and more rewarding.

Therefore, today we make it short: I have summarized seven main paths in a coherent overview for you.

Mapping Future Opportunities

Knowing about the different career paths is important for two main reasons.

A) You can only explore what you are aware of.

In other words, you must know that a possibility exists; otherwise, you cannot assess whether it might lead to your dream job.

B) Second, hearsay can prevent us from finding our vocation.

We often associate certain positions with a somewhat vague intuition.

> As long as we lack a basic understanding of what different positions really look like, we deprive ourselves of genuinely interesting opportunities.

An (Almost Exhaustive) Overview

To help with both challenges, I put together a pragmatic overview for you.

It outlines seven (and a half) main career paths. I categorized them functionally to make it easier for you to assess what might fit you best.

For each, I included a short explanation and sample positions so you can explore further.

Check it out now - because we will use it as the basis next time when we explore how to find out which path might be best for you.
